Books

We’re now stocking and selling an increasing number of books. In the past we focused on books where magazines were the main subject matter, or books with content closely related to elements of magazine publishing, such as fashion photography and graphic design. But we’re now seeing some very innovative developments in the print field as a whole and we believe that by sourcing and offering a range of interesting and unconventional books – nearly always produced by independent publishers – we can better reflect what is going on and make it available.

We’re increasingly drawn to books published in a sequential and/or generic format in the same way as magazines are published, such as the excellent Uniformbooks, and the DNA series from Spector Books. This type of publishing we feel is part of the blurring of the boundary between books and magazines, a distinct phenomenon that is seldom discussed or highlighted. We’ve seen a proliferation of hardcover magazines (such as The Analog Sea Review, MARFA, The Travel Almanac and INDIE) and self-limiting magazine series such as the legendary Migrant Journal. An increasing number of magazines now publish books under their own imprint, most notably Apartamento.

This is undoubtedly an interesting time for the book/magazine relationship.
