X-Girl Show documents the cult label’s renegade, lo-fi 1994 fashion show in New York, which featured a pre-fame Chloë Sevigny and which freeze-framed the changing 90s underground aesthetic in fashion, music and lifestyle.
Founded by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and stylist Daisy von Furth, the X-Girl label began as a counterpart to the men’s skate brand X-large. Captured by photographer and IDEA co-founder, Angela Hill, the event was directed by Sofia Coppola and then-boyfriend Spike Jonz.
The event’s proximity to the Marc Jacobs show ensured a supply of passing celebrities, a number of whom – Kyle MacLachlan and Linda Evangelista, Frances Ford Coppola, Steven Meisel and the late street photographer Bill Cunningham – make cameos in the book.
