Polish artist Roman Klonek works under the spell old fashioned cartoons and modern block printing styles, beautifully captured in Woodcut Vibes, a comprehensive but joyous volume from Slanted that provides a detailed insight into the working process and the background of his woodcut work.
In the 1990s Klonek discovered his passion for woodcuts while studing graphic art in Dusseldorf in the 1990s. The woodcut technique is a very old medium and can often create a surprise effect, especially with contemporary motifs. This is Klonek's trademark: folkloric, whimsical characters, often half animal/half human, often seen in curious surroundings, embarrassing situations and in riotous, pop art colour.
