Tju|ho: Thoughtful Ways of Making and Walking is a book by teacher and researcher Catherine Willems about thoughtful design, exploring how place and community shape sustainable ways of making and walking.
It is focused around the recreation of the traditional hunting sandal worn by the San people of southern Africa. Aimed at fostering exchange at the intersection between design and anthropology, Tju|ho can be seen as a condensation of life in and around Nhoma, Namibia.
Drawing upon her own ancestral knowledge and study of shoemaking, the author leads a unique project combining oral literature, physical anthropology and design into a reflective and beautiful work that is also a celebration of San culture, environmental knowledge and ingenuity.
