We’re always staggered by the quality of Scandinavian interiors magazines – not just the production quality but the depth and range of the content. Ark Journal and My Residence are two magazines that have raised the bar for the whole category in recent years, and The New Era is another that looks very likely to join them.
Published by the impressive Swedish art and design publishing house Arvinius + Orfeus, The New Era is focused on interiors, design, art and craft – mainly but not exclusively Nordic in its sweep. Like the aforementioned journals The New Era is not a glossy stroll, gawking at big rooms and swimming pools. It takes a more meditative approach to the subject, viewing these elements as interrelated and in harmony rather than just gawking at big rooms and swimming pools.
About the latest issue from the publisher:
'In issue 07 of The New Era Magazine, we visit a modernist house by architect Sven Markelius and a 19th-century farm on the Swedish west coast. We travel to Milan to visit the home of architect Francesco Zorzi of NM3, and step inside the home and atelier of Older Studio, makers of bespoke uniforms for forward-thinking brands. We also explore interiors by three leading interior design studios based in Scandinavia and spend time with Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen in his Milan apartment.
“Milan gives you a sense of being part of something larger. It’s a place where design is taken seriously – it is never banalised here,” he says of his adopted hometown.
Elsewhere in the issue, we look at the design events not to be missed this year – in Milan, Paris and Copenhagen – and pay tribute to the act of making.'
