Road to Somebody is a monograph published to accompany Izumi Kato's largest solo exhibition in Japan to date, at Iwami Art Museum in Masuda.
Izumi Kato describes painting as the root of his practice but this book also presents his totemic sculptural work, which he sees as a way to deepen his understanding of what constitutes a painting. While his sculpture incorporates diverse materials – textiles, wood, stone – which are carved, stitched, and collaged into artworks, in his painting Kato uses with bold, clashing colours to depict figures with unusual faces or embryonic forms, or others with bulbous heads on slim, graceful bodies. The book includes installation views, essays, and an interview with the artist.
