Pongchak Art 1001 is the first published collection of Pongchak cassette cover art, revealing the history of these traditional music and related art forms in Korea.
Produced in astonishing quantities from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s and almost completely unrelated to mass media, the packaged art featured in this anthology is drawn from a collection launched 40 years ago by the 'Maboroshi-no Meiban Kaihou Doumei' group (Phantom Masterpiece Liberation League). Its three members – special manga president Takashi Nemoto, music critic Manabu Yuasa and freelance writer Hideo Funabashi – unearthed a wealth of not so much obscure albums but forgotten masterpieces, the diverse range of which is simply astounding.
