Material collects the innovative street portraiture of British artist Jet Swan over the last three years.
Swan engages with members of the public in impromptu studio spaces such as an empty shopfront in Scarborough and a repurposed community hall in Ramsgate in which she balances the public identities nurtured and maintained by those who pass through the studio against darker, intimate photographic spaces, ‘contrasting private and tactile images of the body with photographs that skirt around the margins of conventional staged portraiture’.
