London 82 is a collection of images from the archive of London photographer Sunil Gupta shot in the 1980s.
While a student at the Royal College of Art, Gupta was able to access to colour negative processing facilities and intended to document contemporary gay life in the capital, largely focused around areas such as Earl’s Court, King’s Road and the West End.
However he came to find this concentration ‘not dense enough to create its own public space' so widened the focus to capture the various subcultures (including so-called ‘Sloanes’ and New Romantics specific to the era), migrant and ethnic communities, shoppers and pensioners he saw on the streets.
