Inside the New Shopping Bag: SUSAN BIJL is a comprehensive retrospective in celebration of the company’s 25th anniversary, providing an overview of all collections and colour combinations ever created by the brand, known for its colourful, timeless and functional designs made from recycled ripstop nylon. The company’s famous ‘The New Shopping Bag' began as a response to the plastic problem and has since evolved into a globally beloved design staple.
The distinctive two-coloured carrier with its distinctive diagonal flash originated in Bijl’s Rotterdam studio where she had hand-sewn hundreds of bags before hitting on the design that has since become an international phenomenon. This book tells the story of SUSAN BIJL through the voices of its manufacturing community. Written in the style of the brand’s interview blog in which Susan Bijl engages with people about their work, life and connection with their bags, it pays tribute to both to the timelessness of the bag and to the community of people who carry it around.
The book also includes marketing images and interviews with renowned users of the bags: Loes Luca, Kim Gordon, Bertjan Pot, Experimental Jetset, Mick Johan, Mette Hay and many more others.
