1960-1980 is the first book by the Japanese photographer Fusako Kodama to published in the West, where she is still relatively unknown.
Kodama (b.1945), studied photography under Seiiji Otsuji with Yasuhiro Ishimoto at the Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo. Her works show the quintessential modernism of Kuwasawa Design, which incorporates Bauhaus education.
Fusako Kodama's work depicts the effervescence of modern Japan. From 1960 to 1980, she captures the atmosphere of places and the energy of people. Movement is constant, disorder is periodic, gestures are carefree and instinctive. Her unusual and spontaneous framing finds surprising perspectives in which the subjects can appear slightly out of sync, and casts a gaze that is both gentle and vibrant over twenty years of Japan.
