Forte is 'the typeface everyone knows', one that has been used, misused and overused ever since it was published by The Monotype Corporation in 1962. It was the only typeface by its designer, Austrian graphic artist Karl Reißberger, who has remained little known until this book.
Finding Forte travels the world in search of Reißberger’s early posters, original designs, and advertising materials to trace the origin story of this popular typeface. Sixty years after Forte’s first appearance, it has found new life as Toshi Omagari’s revised typeface, Forte Forward which is released to accompany this book.
Also finding its way into this book on Forte is the work of 31 contemporary artists who have examined Forte’s formal language in dialog with its historical outlines to provide new interpretations in order to open up new approaches to typography.
Finding Forte is fascinating.
