Over two decades ENCENS has earned its place amongst one of the most forward thinking fashion magazines.
ENCENS is focused on the designer rather than the brand to allow each issue more eye-catching and diverse content. It treats fashion very much as an art form, an art object even, and often links to fashion's past with evident homage in its photography shoots. At once elegant and dynamic, the magazine was redesigned from issue 39, going from large format to a smaller, bookish format.
About Issue 55, from the publisher:
'ENCENS n°55 is an immersion, with the number five as a compass between then and now. Starting in 1955 with RENE GRUAU's drawings for CHRISTIAN DIOR - his unreal women in endless gloves and string of pearls. 1965 with ANDRE COURREGES' optic white obsession. 1975 and the rise of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC peasant-inspired fashion with YVES SAINT LAURENT and KENZO, and the first parties where punks and aristocrats mingled. One of them, KLAUS NOMI, sang PURCELL arias in his piercing voice over the pulse of new wave. 1985 at the crossroads of the power woman and the Japanese deconstruction. And today - the emotional fluidity of GIORGIO ARMANI's latest show, and HED MAYNER poised between rigor and ruching. A fictional issue. And a way to look at our present from a steep downward angle.'
