ANFANG/BEGINNING: BERLIN 1994-99 is book of photographs by Christian Stemmler recording the emerging club scene in Berlin between 1994 and 1999.
Shot on film by Stemmler when he was 17 and never before published, the images are an archive of a time that laid the foundation for much of today’s club culture. The Berlin Wall had fallen, communism had collapsed and the city became a sprawling network of abandoned buildings and industrial ruins. While Germany grappled with reunification, a new youth culture took root in squats into homes, turned derelict spaces into clubs and danced on what came before them. ‘
Anfang’ means ‘beginning’ and refers to a city and culture on the edge of reinvention.
