M—A (A SPACE BETWEEN) is a new photography magazine from multidisciplinary studio and publisher based in Bath, co-founded by British designer Joe Richards and French designer Manon Duhamel in 2020.
This is an imposing arrangement of fine art photography that flows seamlessly through each volume in a sequence of thoughtful, imaginative stagings and juxtapositions. The full page spreads are breathtaking, gaining extra power from the flatness afforded by the spiral binding employed for the first two issues and the thread sewn binding use for the latest volume. Contributors were initially drawn from a pool of both emerging and established names and the publisher still aims to mix emergent with established creative excellence, but this is now a publication that has really caught on and stellar names now dominate the content. That said, everything somehow slips impressively into place to make this a warm, meditative and inspiring read, rather than something that might easily feel overwhelming and excluding.
Issue 4 of the magazine continues a curated visual conversation with works by 31 contributing artists curated in a stream-of-consciousness visual narrative exploring 'Signals'. The contributors are Abi Joy Samuel, Alfred Cheng, Alma Stritt, Anselm Kiefer, Anthony Cho Chit On, Anthony McCall, Arrow Lai Siu-Wai, Ashutosh Mittal, Connor Dillman, Damir Faizulin, Daniel Obasi, Francis Alÿs, Geoffrey Holder, Georges Seurat, Haitao Yu, Jiaqi Liao, Jihye Seo, John Cage, Joy Julius, MAXSHO, Martin Margiela, Masaomi Yasunaga, Michaël Borremans, Nacho Gamma, Shanti Bell, Sun Yitian, Sunny Sun, Tega Akpokona, Tianan Ding, Yoko Ono, Ziye Huang, plus interviews with Sun Yitian Daniel Obasi Lidewij Edelkoort and Martin Margiela.
M—A (A SPACE BETWEEN) is produced in a limited numbered print run so don't wait around if you want to snap one of the more original, unusual and very beautiful releases of the last couple of years.
