Along with The Face and Dazed, i-D is one of the definitive youth and ‘street’ culture magazines of the last three or four decades. The magazine is known for its winking ‘smiley’ typographic logo and winking cover stars.
i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980 as a hand-stapled, type-written fanzine. In 1984 Time Out publisher Tony Elliott became a publishing partner for a decade until bought out by Terry Jones, followed by the acquisition by the Vice Media Group in 2012. With Jones at the helm throughout out the magazine has been edited by many high profile opinion-formers and taste-makers, particularly in its first decade with the likes of Dylan Jones, Caryn Franklin and Alex Sharkey. When Vice Media declared bankruptcy in 2023 the magazine went into limbo before being purchased by Karlie Kloss. The supermodel and entrepreneur has relaunched it as a biannual with a new team, with the experienced Thom Bettridge (032c, Highsnobiety, Interview) appointed as editor-in-chief.
