Sociotype is a handsome new journal devised to serve as a type specimen and a platform for thinking around issues in the arts, culture and society.
Published by London design studio and type foundry Socio, each issue focuses on a single theme inspired by (and typeset in) a different type family designed by the company (here it's Gestura and Rework). This in fact 'reworks' the concept of the type specimen into a fully-fledged magazine, from the merely functional to something widescreen and fully absorbing.
The first issue, 'The Gesture' examines gestures of power and political influence, sign language poetry, the secret codes of the illuminati, street gangs and Easyjet flight attendants, NASA’s gestural VR programme of the 1990s, the cultural and historical significance of the raised fist, and more.
