Roger Ballen is renowned for his probing, often challenging images that exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation, and photography.
Through the 1990s he developed a style he describes as 'documentary fiction', and after 2000 the people he discovered and documented living on the margins of South African society increasingly became a cast of actors in his signature aesthetic.
He is is one of the most important and influential art photographers today and this book provides an excellent showcase for the strange and extreme images he makes, confronting the viewer and challenging them to accompany him on a journey into their own minds as he explores the deeper recesses of his own.
