Modern Kyoto Pattern is a dense little book showcasing around 240 designs selected from an enormous collection left by the designer Tetsuro Terada from Japan’s golden age of machine printing. It provides an excellent visual record of how textile design changed and evolved in the 20th century.
The development of machine printing in Japan made mass production possible in the field of textiles, particularly in Kyoto where up until the 1970s the creation and production of a broad spectrum of new designs incorporated traditional Japanese motifs, pop culture, and many other influences.
