Even is a chunky contemporary art journal that ticks the usual boxes for this sort of thing – analysis of art, artists and institutions along with reviews and opinion pieces. But it’s altogether something much fresher than this and one of our favourite magazines in the store.
It's a magazine believes and argues for the rightful place of art criticism. That is, a systemic approach that tracks aesthetic developments as we proceed through the 21st century, when much art is more mass-market, social media disseminated and whole lot more expensive; a much more contextual criticism that scrutinises or determines where lies the hand of the social, political or financial, rather than simply buying in or ‘liking’. If you like your discussion more long-form with a good dose of the political or current affairs, you'll find Even is strong, intelligent stuff.
