Fuelled by the spread of Trumpism, among other things, this brand of toxic macho has become increasingly mainstream. Beyond the Manosphere – Masculinities Today explores masculinity not only as an agent and performance of power – but also as a lived reality that can be conflicting, banal, unsteady and tender.

The book accompanies the exhibition of the same name at Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. It approaches masculinity as a broad and layered phenomenon, featuring artworks made between the 1960s to the present day that approach masculinity from the perspectives of intimacy, queerness, labour, race, class, fetishisation, vulnerability and popular culture. Across these works, masculinity appears not as a stable or unified identity but as a contested field of representations, gestures, desires, and contradictions. Dominance and aggression coexist with fragility and banality; control with exposure; fantasy with failure. A number of works have been created especially for the exhibition.

Bierke, 176pp, 21cm x 26cm, illustrated hardcover, 2026
